Underground Hip-Hop stays underground for a reason. It allows the artists to maintain their creativity without big brother stepping in and striking down from the ivory tower (major record labels). Write the songs you want, make the beats you like...truly independent. However you like...its yours. Its fun to see artists who are well decorated in their own respect come together to make music. For this Freestyle MC and scratch DJ, it translates into artistic excellence. They are a couple of the more innovative names in Hip-Hop (that you've never heard of). They are Eyedea & Abilities.
Eyedea, who is a Rock Steady MC champion in 2000, signed with the Rhymesayers in 2000. The battle MC traveled with other notable Minneapolis artists like Slug and Atmosphere...before teaming up with DJ Abilities. This turntablist - might be one of my favorites. A DMC champion (three times over) along with several mixtapes, produced First Born with Eydea in 2001...and their career was off to the races. The tone of music is hard to explain. Some of its funny, some is a bit enraged. Its easier to just listen - try this on for size --> E&A - song: "Now" The Twin Cities duo dropped By The Throat in 2009, and its a straight emotional/reality check. DJ Abilities is the main producer, who uses a combination of blues/jazz/scratch samples mixed with raw distortion. While Eyedea spits lines hot like fire...every lyric is said with such purpose and a high sense of urgency.

I got a chance to catch them last December at Reggie's Rock Club in Chicago, and they can put on a show.
